Sickle Cell Anemia

Sickle cell anemia is a severe progressive disease
resulting from homozygosity for a mutation
in the !-globin gene. It is especially
frequent in Africa and in the black population of
North America. With a frequency of 1 in 500, it
is an important cause of morbidity and mortality
in these regions. The disease is transmitted
by autosomal recessive inheritance.
